This Truck Could Replace the U.S. Military's Humvees

It's no secret that the U.S. military has been looking for a replacement for the aging Humvee, and here is one of the leading contenders.

The L-ATV from Oshkosh Defense takes all of the Humvee's strengths and builds on them, while fixing the older vehicle's obvious weaknesses.

When IEDs started taking out Hummers all over Iraq, it became clear that having an easy to install and scalable armoring package was essential, so the L-ATV is built to handle this from the get-go.

Another cool feature is that the L-ATV comes in a Diesel-electric hybrid version. No, this doesn't mean that the military is suddenly turning into a bunch of Prius driving tree huggers. It really has more to do with increasing the vehicle's range. Everyone values fuel economy when you're half way back from a raid into enemy territory, and the tank starts to run a bit low.

Oshkosh Defense isn't exactly a new kid on the block. They already supply the military with some pretty huge trucks.
