7 Ways To Kill Your Blog Quickly

Most of you know how much I enjoy visiting other blogs, reading their fabulous content and sharing my opinion.  Yep, the blogging community is one close knit family that I’m very proud to be a member of.

One thing I have noticed though as I have visited some blogs lately is that they are not doing nearly as well as they could.  Now some of these blog owners really have no clue why they aren’t getting many visitors or comments.

I’m no expert on this but I do have an opinion.  I thought I would share with you a few things I have seen that just may be killing their blog and see if you don’t agree with me.

1.  Their writing schedule

They can’t stick to a schedule.  Now don’t get me wrong, some people like to write when they want to write and they can’t stand sticking to a schedule.  But let’s face it, we don’t know when the heck you’re going to post so it’s hard for us to even keep up with.  I hate to tell you this, but you aren’t the only blog we visit.

2.  Closed comments

This one still surprises me but I’ve hopped over to a few blogs and their comment section is closed.  What’s up with these people?  Don’t they realize what a blog is all about?  If you want people to come and read what you are sharing, we want to be able to comment on your content.  You shut us out, we’ll stop coming around.  Sorry!

3.  Sharing your content

If you don’t give us enough options for sharing your content to the different social networking sites, then we won’t.  I’ve been to some blogs and the only options they give me to share their content is through Facebook or Twitter.  Nothing else!

You have to realize that just because those sites might be the only ones you care the most about, they certainly aren’t the only social networking sites other people care about. Give your readers plenty of options to share your content or some of them will just not share it at all.

4.  No search feature

Now I know some people may disagree with me on this one but everyone needs a search feature on their blog.  Not to go to Google but to locate certain topics on your blog.  Make it easy and accessible for your readers.

If you don’t want to go that route, set up an Archive page that easily lists your posts so that your readers can find whatever topic or post they want.  Remember, they may want to go back through old posts and check out what you’ve done in the past. Give them an easy option.

5.  Proper RSS Feed Setup

Most blogs themes come with a generic RSS feed icon that is directed to a standard RSS feed.  While that is all well and good, these basic standard feed settings aren’t compatible with all browsers.  I should know, I’ve tried to sign up with several lately and all I got was garble.  I mean the page was totally filled with junk.

Set your feed up in Feedburner or some other service.  It will make it so much easier for your readers and you definitely want them to sign up with your feed.

6.  Old posts

Now this is something I’ve seen recommended a lot for bloggers when they seem to run out of things to blog about.  Run out of things to blog about, seriously?  Yep, that even surprises me.

What I’ve seen recommended is for them to take an old post, rename it and then rewrite the post and make it look like fresh content.  Seriously?  I know, I still can’t wrap my head around this one but trust me, don’t even think about it.  There are plenty of things you can do to shock that brain into coming up with new content.

7.  Those darn captchas

Luckily I haven’t seen as many of these lately but I have come across two blogs in particular.  I read the posts, thought it was great, wrote my comment and then couldn’t for the life of me get that darn captcha code right.  I got so frustrated and said to hell with it.

Change your plug-in guys, don’t make it that darn hard.  We like things easy.  Okay, I like things easy!

I Know There’s More

I know there are a lot more than this that can kill your blog quickly but these are the ones that stick out the most with me.

You know I want everyone to have success online so anything I can do to point you in that direction, I’ll do my best.  Now I already told you that I don’t claim to be an expert but I have definitely learned a thing or two lately about how to have a successful blog.  Trust me, if you have too many of what I mentioned above then you probably already know why you aren’t getting as many visitors.  Hey, I’m just saying.
