These are the best ways to market your app on a shoe string budget. None of these tips should cost you any money.
1. Describe your App:
You have tirelessly worked on your application, you know its ins and outs, you know what works and what needs work. So you better be able to describe your app with at least 5 to 10 sentences. Basically it needs to look like a descent size paragraph that hits all the major points:
- Whats is the app?
- Who is it targeted towards?
- Why would someone even download this?
- How does it work/play?
Many times I see developers only have a sentence or two, which vaguely describe the program. Now i understand many apps have simple concepts, but this is your one chance to sell your app to the masses. So make it look Fun, Professional, and Interesting.
2. Make a Video:
YouTube is the third most visited website on the internet. People love videos, it doesn’t even have to be that professional. Just take a video of your hands using the app, don’t let the camera shake, and make sure there’s sound. Commentary is appreciated as people like to hear straight from the developers mouth what is happening or what to expect.
3. Give as Much Information as Possible:
When contacting websites to get the word out on your app make sure you present as much information as you can.
- Who you are?
- Why are you contacting the website?
- What are you presenting?
Make sure you include your awesome description of the app, the links to where a user can get the app, and a link to the video. Also, don’t just copy and paste the description you have on iTunes or the Android Market. If you can give the website a different/better description they will be more interested.
4. Promo Codes or Free Copy
The hardest time for a fledgling app is always the beginning, because it is competing against 200,000+ other apps. Make sure to send anyone you want to try your app a promo code or a free copy of your app.
5. Learn by Example
Look at other popular apps and learn what makes them popular. You don’t want to compare yourself to ‘Infinity Blade’ but look at other small studies that made it big. No one knew who Rovio was til Angry Birds.
Now all the marketing in the world won’t save a poorly created app. So make sure you knock out all the bugs, keep the presentation aesthetically pleasing, and most of all it has to be interesting to you. If the creator doesn’t find his/her app useful why would anyone else?
