What the iPhone 5 Might Look Like

No one knows what Apple’s next smartphone will look like, but that’s not stopping anyone from guessing. Could one of these Photoshop mockups turn out be your next iPhone?

If Apple holds to its typical schedule, the company will hold a major press event in the beginning of September; it's usually in the week after Labor Day. Rumor has it that this year, the event could include the unveiling of the latest iPhone.

Here's what we know about the next iPhone: Absolutely nothing. If I can channel PCMag's Mobile Lead Analyst Sascha Segan for a moment, it's either going to be larger or smaller, will come in either one, two, or three models, is definitely going to have an edge-to-edge screen, and probably won't have an edge-to-edge screen. In short, no one knows, but that doesn’t stop anyone from offering up guesses ranging from the educated to the downright bizarre.

Based on tenuous leaks, and what seem to be reasonable guesses based on what Apple has done in the past, many have put together Photoshop mockups of what they think the next iPhone is going to look like. We've rounded up nine of them here. There are a few running themes: All agree that the phone will be thinner. Most people think it will have a larger screen, to compete with the 4-plus-inch displays on many Android phones. Many also think that screen will run edge-to-edge, meaning the iPhone wouldn't itself be bigger. Some think this model will forgo the physical Home button, and others think that button will be larger and support gestures.
